Celebrating Pride at House on the Dials

We recently had a fantastic time celebrating Pride at House on the Dials Day Nursery and Preschool.

Throughout the week, our children explored the meaning of Pride through a variety of engaging discussions and creative activities. Together, we talked about the importance of equality, kindness, friendship, respect and love, while celebrating the fact that every person is unique and special. Here's a snapshot of some of the wonderful activities we enjoyed.

Creating Pride Decorations

Our preschool children loved helping to transform the nursery with beautiful Pride decorations. They created colourful rainbow artwork, vibrant masks and a range of Pride-inspired crafts, filling every room with colour, creativity and smiles. The bright displays provided plenty of opportunities to celebrate diversity and inclusion throughout the setting.

Rainbow Mark Making

Our preschoolers enjoyed exploring colourful mark-making using pipettes, food colouring and a variety of creative techniques to produce beautiful rainbow patterns. As they carefully squeezed the pipettes, they watched the colours spread and mix together, making predictions and experimenting with different marks and designs.

Alongside encouraging creativity, this activity strengthened fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and the hand muscles needed for early writing. It also introduced important early science concepts, including colour mixing, cause and effect, and making observations.

Pride Sensory Play

Children across the nursery thoroughly enjoyed exploring our Pride-themed sensory trays. Our younger children explored by scooping, grasping and dropping pasta, listening carefully to the different sounds it made as it landed in the tray. Older children explored rainbow-coloured rice by scooping, pouring, filling and transferring it between containers.

As they played, they developed early mathematical thinking by comparing quantities, exploring capacity and using mathematical language such as "full", "empty", "more" and "less".

Rainbow Gloop

Our Blossoms children also had lots of fun experimenting with colourful rainbow gloop. Using food colouring, they mixed the colours together to create vibrant rainbows before exploring the changing texture with their hands.

The children observed how the mixture transformed from dry flour into a wet, slimy consistency while learning new descriptive vocabulary such as "soft", "wet" and "slimy".

Story Time

Our Book of the Week was ABC Pride, which introduced children to letters, sounds and early literacy while encouraging meaningful conversations about kindness, respect and inclusion. The story sparked discussions about different people, different families and the importance of treating everyone with care and compassion.

Celebrating Diversity Together

Celebrating events such as Pride helps children learn about belonging, empathy and the importance of kindness and respect for others. We are incredibly proud of their creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm as they embraced the message that everyone deserves to feel valued, respected and included.
