The children at House on the Dials have been thoroughly enjoying our newly decorated art room!
It is a fantastic creative space, and the children have loved exploring everything it has to offer. The room has been thoughtfully designed to encourage independence, creativity, and imagination. It features:
A chalk wall where children can practise vertical mark making
A variety of tables for painting, drawing, cutting, sticking, and creative construction
A wide range of accessible resources including pens, pencils, paints, paper, and other creative materials
Display areas where children can proudly showcase their wonderful artwork
We are already so impressed by the creativity that has been taking place in this inspiring environment!
Why is art so important in the early years?
Art and creative experiences play a vital role in early childhood development. They support children’s holistic growth by helping them develop key cognitive, emotional, social, and physical skills through exploration, rather than focusing solely on outcomes or finished pieces.
These experiences nurture imagination, strengthen fine motor skills, and provide children with a healthy and expressive outlet for emotions.
Cognitive Development
Creative play encourages problem-solving, critical thinking, and experimentation. It helps children make sense of the world around them, explore ideas, and develop natural curiosity.
Emotional Development
Art provides children with a powerful way to express and process their feelings. It builds confidence, self-esteem, and pride in their achievements. As children grow, creative activities can also offer a calming, therapeutic outlet that supports emotional resilience.
Social Skills & Communication
Working on creative projects together helps children develop important social skills such as sharing, cooperation, teamwork, and turn-taking. It also supports language development as children describe their creations and share ideas with others.
Physical Development
Using tools such as paintbrushes, crayons, scissors, and modelling materials helps strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. These skills are essential for early writing development and everyday physical tasks.
Imagination and Flexible Thinking
Exploring a variety of materials encourages children to think creatively and flexibly. This ability to adapt and imagine different possibilities is an important foundation for future learning and problem-solving.
Further development
We are absolutely delighted with our new art room and are already seeing how much the children enjoy using it. We have exciting plans to continue developing the space further, so stay tuned to see how it evolves!
